Flora and Fauna

Studying in Undana means you can get easy access to all the wonders of East Nusa Tenggara province. East Nusa Tenggara province is an archipelago consisting of 1,192 islands with unique flora, fauna and gorgeous blue sea. What are some the unique flora and fauna that you can find here ?

Komodo dragons (Varanus Komodoensis)

Komodo is a large species of lizard that are native to islands of Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Motang and Gili Dasami. Komodo is found in 26 other islands in East Nusa Tenggara. A member of monitor lizard family (Varanidae), it is the largest living species of lizard growing to a maximum length of 3 metres and weighing up to around 70 kilograms. Komodo dragons are carnivore and their diets comprise of invertebrates, birds, mammals and carrion.

Timor Deer (Cervus timorensis floriensis)

This deer is native to several regions of Indonesia, including Java and Bali. These deers are very sociable but you will have to wait if you want to see them in the open. They tend to be very cautious and have a very cautious instincts.

Banded Pig (Sus scrofa vittatus)

The Banded pig is a subspecies of the wild boa. They are also found in Sumatra, Java, Lesser Sundas. The Banded pigs are omnivores that will eat herbs, roots, rhizomes, grasses, bird eggs, small rats, lizards, frogs, termites and even maggots.


East Nusa Tenggara province is also a home for a species of wild dog known as ajag (Cuon alpinus javanics), wild horse, wild bull, variants of turtles, 10 different species of whales and dolphins. East Nusa Tenggara unique flora is also attributed by the dry tropical south winds. University of Nusa Cendana literally means the university from the isle of sandalwood indicated that this is the home of the precious sandalwood. Apart from that, the islands are abundant of lontar trees (Borassus flabellifer), rattan, olives, bamboos, tamarind, sterculia, and mangrove.
